The power of yet: Helping students see themselves as math people

Students don't get stronger at math by getting things right the first time. They get stronger by working through what doesn't work–yet.

Take a student working on addition and subtraction fluency with our Sum Fishing task. They're close. The final numbers don't line up. To move forward, they have to take their solution apart, rethink the strategy, and try something new.

That moment isn't a sign the student can't solve the puzzle. It means they haven't found the strategy that works yet.

Growth mindset research backs this up, and it's more specific than "encourage kids to make mistakes." Telling students to keep trying isn't enough on its own. What actually shifts belief is real progress: students need to hit a wall, change their approach, and watch that change pay off. Persistence has to lead somewhere for it to mean anything.

That's the design problem we solve for. Struggly tasks give every student a way in, and they stay challenging as the task unfolds. Students test ideas, spot patterns, and adjust their approach because the math feels like something worth playing with, not just getting through.

Do that enough times and something changes. Students stop reading "I don't know the strategy yet" as "I'm not a math person." They learn the difference between those two things.
