Math is visual: Build understanding with visual exploration
Before a student memorizes that 3 × 4 = 12, what if they could see why it's true?
Understanding sticks when students explore a concept visually first. The facts and procedures come later, and they mean something when they land.
Take a multiplication task like Struggly’s Hall of Mirrors. Students aren't memorizing a fact table, they're building the relationship themselves. Move a slider and the connection between factors and product becomes visible in real time. One student sees three groups of four. Another sees the same thing as 4 + 4 + 4. Someone else flips the factors and finds four groups of three, or 3 + 3 + 3 + 3.
That's not one fact. That's a web of ideas connected to the same piece of math, and students are the ones making the connections, not just receiving them.
This matters beyond the moment. Sense-making like this is a path to fluency with math facts that doesn't run through anxiety or rote memorization. And it's not just useful for multiplication today. That same flexible understanding is what division, factors, prime numbers, and algebraic thinking will later stand on.
The research lines up with this. Mathematical understanding deepens when visual and symbolic reasoning develop together, not when one is taught and the other is assumed.
